- Almonds
have long been appreciated for their special package of nutrients.
Almonds supply little saturated fat, have no cholesterol and are an
excellent source of vitamin E.
-
- The majority of fat in almonds is monounsaturated.
This "good fat" is the same type found in Italian olive
oil, which is valued for its healthful properties. You may be
surprised to know that the fat profile of almonds is even more
desirable because it is lower in saturated fat than olive oil.
Almonds
are low in carbohydrates. One ounce (28.5
grams) of almonds contains 6 grams of protein, 6 grams of
carbohydrates, 3 grams of dietary fiber, no cholesterol (only mono
and polyunsaturated fats) and more than 35% of the daily
requirement of vitamin E, one of nature's most powerful antioxidants
and believed to play a role in preventing certain kinds of cancer,
heart disease and cataracts.
Almonds are mentioned as far back in history as the
Bible. They were a prized ingredient in breads served to Egypt's
pharos. Their exact ancestry in unknown, but almonds are thought to
have originated in China and Central Asia. The Italians showered
newlyweds with almonds as a fertility charm. Today, Italians give
guests at weddings a bag of sugared almonds, representing children,
happiness, romance, good health and fortune.
